Lesson 02: Half steps and whole steps

Two white keys, no black key between them — is that still a step?
In Lesson 01 you kept hearing "the smallest step." Now we name it and use it. Almost every white-to-white move on the keyboard has a black key sitting between them — but twice per octave it does not, and that is where beginners trip. They assume every letter-to-next-letter jump is the same size. It is not. Getting this one fact right is what makes scales and chords later feel inevitable instead of memorized. This lesson makes the ruler concrete.
Explanation
The half step is the smallest distance
A half step (also called a semitone) is the distance from one key to the very next key — the closest key in either direction, whether it is black or white1. On a keyboard there is nothing smaller1. From C to the black key just above it (C-sharp) is a half step. From that black key up to D is another half step.
A whole step (or whole tone) is simply two half steps stacked1. From C, go up one half step to C-sharp, then another half step to D: C to D is a whole step. Most adjacent white keys — C to D, D to E, F to G, G to A, A to B — are a whole step apart, because a black key sits between them.
The surprise: E-F and B-C are half steps
Look at the keyboard and find the two spots where two white keys sit side by side with no black key between them: that happens between E and F, and between B and C1. Because there is no key in between, E to F is only a half step, and B to C is only a half step — even though both are plain white keys.
This is the single most-missed fact for beginners: not every letter-to-next-letter move is a whole step. Two of them (E-F, B-C) are half steps. Miss this and every scale you try to build later will come out wrong.

Counting to measure
Because a half step is the atom, you can measure any small distance by counting keys. From C up to E: C to C-sharp (1), C-sharp to D (2), D to D-sharp (3), D-sharp to E (4) — four half steps, which is two whole steps. You will lean on this counting habit constantly in the next lesson.
Worked example (follow along)
Question: is B to C a half step or a whole step, and is A to B the same?
- Look for a black key between B and C. There is none — B and C are adjacent white keys. So B to C is a half step.
- Now A to B: there is a black key between them (A-sharp / B-flat). So A to B spans two half steps — a whole step.
- Conclusion: two moves that both look like "next letter up" are different sizes. A-B is a whole step; B-C is a half step. The keyboard's shape told us, not the letters.
Your turn (faded example)
Measure E up to G in half steps by counting every key you pass. Fill in the blanks (count first, then check):
- E to F is a ______ step (no black key between them).
- F to G is a ______ step (there is a black key, F-sharp, between them).
- So E to G totals ______ half steps, which people also call ______ steps.
Answer: E to F is a half step, F to G is a whole step, so E to G is three half steps total, which equals one and a half whole steps. The trap is assuming E-F is a whole step like most letter jumps; because there is no black key there, it is only a half step.
Summary + what's next
The ruler is set: a half step is the move to the very next key, a whole step is two of them, and the two natural half steps hiding in the white keys are E-F and B-C. You can now measure any short distance by counting keys.
Next we use this ruler to measure the distance between any two notes and give that distance a name — a second, a third, a fifth, an octave. That naming system is called an interval, and it is how musicians describe "how far apart" two notes are. On to Lesson 03.
